Garage Converted to a Home Theater

We turned an old storage garage into a dark, comfortable movie room: new wiring, insulation, drywall, a ductless AC unit, charcoal walls with brass sconces and room for a row of theater recliners.

Finished home theater in a converted garage with red recliners and brass wall sconces

The project

From a storage garage to a movie room.

This was a working garage with open studs, shelves full of tools and a concrete floor. The owners wanted a room for movie nights that stays dark and comfortable and doesn't feel like a garage at all.

We took it down to the framing, added an electrical subpanel and ran new circuits with outlets where the screen, speakers and seating go. The walls and ceiling were insulated and covered with drywall, then taped and finished. A ductless mini-split handles heating and cooling, so no ductwork had to come from the house.

The finish is dark on purpose: charcoal walls and ceiling, recessed lights and brass sconces that throw light up and down the walls. The theater recliners went in last.
