What should you plan for in an ADU in Culver City?
Culver City runs its own Building Safety Division and its own online Permit Portal. It wants a separate application for each structure and each type of work: building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, demolition and solar. Small jobs under the city's plan check threshold skip plan check, and larger ones go through one or more review rounds. Work hours are set by the city too: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sundays. We set the start date only after we know which permit path a project is on.
Culver City does its own permitting, with separate building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical permits. We file and track all of them for an ADU.
Just over half of Culver City's homes are owner-occupied, and the median home was built in 1963. Much of the city is mid-century single-family housing. (Source)
City of Culver City: about 55% owner-occupied; median year built 1963 (ACS 2024 5-year).
Planning tips · Culver City
- Start with a free site visit. Setbacks, utilities and access decide the real scope.
- A garage conversion reuses the existing foundation and walls. A detached unit is built from the ground up.
- Many older homes need an electrical panel upgrade to support an ADU. We check the panel at the first visit.
How we work
From the site visit to final inspection.
For a Culver City ADU we start with a site visit to check setbacks, utilities and access. Then we draw the unit, take it through Culver City Building Safety plan check and build it. The kitchen and storage inside come from our own workshop, sized for a small floor plan.

“We hired this team to convert part of our garage into a laundry area, a guest bathroom, and a shower. They did an amazing job! The tile work, wood accent walls, and vanity turned out great. The guys worked very clean and neat, kept the place tidy every day, and finished everything on time. Highly recommend them!”
“Great contractor! Did our apartment bathroom remodel. Clear communication, quality work. Would definitely hire again!”
